friday favourite – defying the nazis

Defying the Nazis: The Sharp’s War  airs on Sept 20th at 9pm on PBS. It’s a new documentary co-directed by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky about a little-known but important mission by an American minister and his wife from Wellesley MA to rescue refugees and dissidents in Europe before and after the start of World War II.

The story is compelling but the reason it is my friday favourite is because my very good friend Marina Goldman is the voice of Martha Sharp, alongside Tom Hanks as Waitstill Sharp!

Marina has boundless energy, unlimited talent and compassion to spare! Check out the trailer here and tune in on Sept 20th for the documentary.

After visiting Poland this past Spring, I learned so much about the Polish Jews and their history. Warsaw has an amazing new museum telling that story. I have read several books on the subject since my return. The most poignant and personal, and the one that every adult human being should read, is Elie Wiesel’s “Night.” I read it in one sitting – at first with intrigue but those feelings quickly changed to shock and anger, then hope and love. Elie Wiesel’s story taught me, among many things, that the stories of the victims of the Holocaust must never be forgotten, or paraphrasing his words, they would suffer the same crime over again.
I will look for this series. Thanks, Heather!
